Instructions for Requesting a New TN Specialty Plate for Your Organization

In order to establish a new specialty license plate, you will be required to submit two lists, (1) one sorted by county, and (2) a list sorted by plate order for 1000 applicants.  These lists must include addresses and counties of residence for each party and payment equal to a sum of $35 for each.  Additionally, please provide these lists in a Microsoft Office format if possible (Microsoft Word or Excel).  The total amount to be returned should be $35,000 ($35 X 1000 license plates = $35,000).  In addition, plates may be personalized by including an extra $35.00 (total amount per person including additional fee $70 per plate).  If personalized plates are sold on the initial order this may slow down production due to each personalized plate requiring special administrative attention.

Also a certification statement must be included at the end of your list stating the following:

“I certify that I have verified all names submitted to the Vehicle Services Section.  This certifies that all names submitted are actual vehicle owners and comply with the state motor vehicle laws relating to registration and licensing of motor vehicles.”

  • Name Printed
  • Signature

The organization is responsible for design creation and submission to the Vehicle Services Section for approval.  Upon approval a unique set of alpha and numerical digits will be assigned that will make up the license plate number.  This process is solely at the discretion of the division.

Listed below is a short list of general guidelines for plate design.

  1. License plate dimension:  6” x 12”, with 5 1/2” x 11 1/2” usable design space.
  2. White reflective sheeting will form the background of the plate.
  3. The county name space may be used in the plate design in accordance with T.C.A. 55-4-202 (b)(2) in which the registration plates shall bear at the top of the plate the word “Tennessee” and at the bottom the name of the category.
  4. The word “TENNESSEE” should be made as large as space allows (about 6.5”).

The final artwork should be on hardcopy (2 copies) as well as on diskette following the guidelines attached.

You will also find attached a template that should be helpful in designing the new license plate.

As always, our goal will be to produce a new plate that is attractive, but most importantly functional.  We look forward to working with you on this project and if at any time you should have questions, please feel free to call me at (615) 532-1135 or e-mail debbie.minton@tn.gov
